Points Guru Chronicles: How the Petro-Points Rewards Program Works

Owning a vehicle means you’ll have to pay for car insurance, maintenance costs, and gas. You can help offset some of those expenses by joining the Petro-Points rewards program.

About Petro-Canada

Petro-Canada was a government-owned company until it was privatized in 1990. The firm was acquired by Calgary-based Suncor Energy in 2009 and Petro-Canada continues to operate as a subsidiary. There are more than 1,500 retail and wholesale Petro-Canada stations across the country.

How to earn Petro-Points

First, you’ll need to get a Petro-Points card. You can register for the program online and you’ll receive 2,500 points just for signing up. You’ll earn points on your regular purchases at the station:

  • Fuel: Up to 10 points per litre
  • Car washes: 20 points per $1 spent
  • Store purchases: 20 points per $1 spent

And there are special offers, which can help you earn up to five times the points. For example, you can earn double the points when you purchase 100 litres or more of fuel until Dec. 31.

You can collect 20% more points when you link your Hudson’s Bay Rewards, CAA, BCAA, or SPC card. And you’ll earn points when you rent a vehicle from Discount or book a trip with itravel2000.

If you have a CIBC Petro-Points MasterCard, you’ll earn 50% additional points at grocery stores, drug stores, and Petro-Canada locations as well as 5,000 bonus points each month when you spend more than $1,000 using your card. However, applications are no longer being accepted for the card.

How to redeem Petro-Points

You can redeem your points in store or online. In store, you can redeem your points for fuel, car washes, snacks, lottery tickets, gift cards, and more. Online, you can get a fuel savings reward card, car wash card, or electronic gift cards. Points can also be exchanged for CAA dollars in increments of 1,000 points. Every 1,000 points are equal to one CAA dollar.

If you don’t want to use your points, you can donate them points to the Canadian Olympic Team, the Canadian Paralympic Team, or the Coaching Association of Canada.

The value of Petro-Points

The value of Petro-Points varies. You’ll get the least value for your points when you redeem them for fuel.

You’ll get a better value if you redeem them for a Petro-Canada gift card.

But you’ll get an even better value from them if you redeem them for a fuel savings reward card.

The value of your points vary based on the type of gift card you get. For example, you’ll get a better value if you use your Petro-Points for Bay gift cards instead of Best Buy gift cards.

But you’ll get the best value for your points on car wash gift cards. The SuperWash and GlideWash cards are good for five free washes. However, the Season Pass card is good for up to 90 washes in 90 days. There’s a limit of one wash per day, which means you could wash your car every day and get a better value for your points).

The bottom line

The Petro-Points program allows you to earn points but it’s much more difficult to collect them faster since you can no longer apply for the CIBC Petro-Points MasterCard. Also, the value of Petro-Points is lower when compared to Esso Extra points.
