Points and redemptions
Earning points
When purchasing any form of travel (including flights) on the ExpediaforTD website using the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card, cardholders will earn 9 TD Points per dollar.
Since the value of 1 TD Reward Point is $0.005 when redeemed via the ExpediaforTD website, that equates to getting back 4.5% on every dollar spent on travel – one of the richest rewards rates on travel spending. Just to put things into perspective, many other popular travel credit cards in Canada offer the equivalent of just 2% on travel.
Using ExpediaforTD also offers additional benefits including access to the same flights and hotels conventionally offered on Expedia.ca, the ability to redeem flights on hundreds of airlines, and price guarantees on flight and hotel packages (within a 24 hour timeframe).
While the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card offers unparalleled rewards on travel, the rewards on everyday spending aren’t as favourable in comparison. For all purchases not made through ExpediaforTD, this card offers a strong (but not spectacular) flat rate of 3 TD points per dollar – or the equivalent of 1.5% in travel rewards. That includes spending on groceries, restaurants and gas.
It’s important to note that you will only earn 9 TD points for online travel purchases made through ExpediaforTD. Since using ExpediaforTD offers access to flights from almost every airline, this is far from a drawback and ExpediaforTD should be your default for all travel purchases made on this card.
All in all, the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card is great for frequent flyers or anyone who travels or books hotels at least once every year or so. If you rarely travel or spend a disproportionately large amount of money on groceries or gas, for instance, this card may not be the best fit for you.
Flexible redemption options
You can redeem TD Points for almost everything travel related, from flights on any airline with no blackout dates to hotels, car rentals and vacation packages. You can also apply points to cover the cost of taxes and fees. To redeem your points, you’ll need to visit the TDRewards website.
TD Reward Points can also be redeemed for merchandise and gift cards from TD’s e-store. However, you’ll likely get less value out of your points this way so it’s best to reserve your points for travel-related redemptions instead.
Sign-up bonus
One of the key reasons the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card ranks among the best credit cards in Canada – aside from its strong rewards rate on travel – is its extremely attainable sign-up bonus.
New applicants who are successfully approved for this card by March 6, 2022 can earn up to 80,000 TD Points (a travel value of up to $400 when you book travel purchases through ExpediaForTD.com) plus 0% promotional interest rate on travel purchases for the first six months. You'll earn 20,000 TD Points when you make your first purchase with your card, then another 60,000 TD Points when you spend $1,000 within 90 days of account opening.
You'll also get a full annual fee rebate for the primary and additional Cardholders (a value of up to $170) for the first year. Combined with the total possible value of your welcome points, that's a total of $570 cash value.
Fees, interest rate and income requirements
On par with most premium travel credit cards, the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card has a $120 annual fee and an income requirement of $60,000 per individual (or $100,000 per household).
If you do want to pick up a second card to grant an authorized user (such as your partner or child) the ability to also make purchases from your account, it will cost an additional $50 – which is a slight drawback.
One important thing to consider is that if you have a TD-All Inclusive Banking Plan, you can have the card’s annual fee rebated. Provided you maintain $5,000 in your account at all times, the All Inclusive Banking Plan is free. However, if you fall below the $5,000 threshold you’ll be charged a costly $30 per month. That adds up to more than the card’s annual fee. So unless you have enough money in the bank to always maintain such a large balance, even after paying off your monthly bills, you may want to consider not taking this route.
In terms of other fees, this card has an annual percentage rate (APR) on purchases of 19.99%, which will only be charged in instances you carry a balance. Cash advances and balance transfers have a marginally higher interest rate of 22.99%. All these factors considered, this card is a good fit for spenders who regularly pay off their balance.
Travel Insurance (and other perks)
Insurance Benefits
As a premier travel credit card from one of Canada’s biggest banks, it comes with little surprise that the TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card boasts a full suite of travel insurance benefits.
This card will cover you and your family in cases of medical emergencies while abroad up to $1,000,000 over 21 consecutive days (or 4 days if you’re a senior who’s 65 or older, with the option for extension). The card also provides travel accident insurance in case you’re harmed while in transit on a common carrier such as plane as well as baggage insurance that kicks in six hours from when your luggage is lost, stolen or delayed by an airline.
What all this means is you can avoid shelling out extra cash for insurance while travelling – which can amount to significant savings if you travel regularly.
Rental car benefits
Another advantage this card offers on the insurance front is rental car insurance. Provided you pay for the full cost of the rental card on your TD credit card and waive the Collision Damage Waiver, you’ll be insured in circumstances where your rental car is stolen or damaged (note, third party coverage isn’t included).
As an added bonus, if you use your TD Card at Avis or Budget rental car agencies, you could save up to 10% off the base price of your rental car.
